Montgomery and Bucks county schools are close to Philadelphia. A good web site to find out information about individual school districts is www.schoolmatters.com. You can't compare districts across states, but you could look up your current district in Michigan as well.

Should a founder of public school be allowed to sue parents for asking questions?

Should a founder of public school be allowed to sue parents for asking questions?
This was in the Philadelphia Inquirer yesterday. Devon charter school sues parents By Martha Woodall Inquirer Staff Writer Several parents at the Agora Cyber Charter School in Devon who asked questions about the school's finances have been sued by the founder and her management company. Dorothy June Brown contends that the parents and the Agora Parent Organization defamed her and Cynwyd Group L.L.C. in complaints sent to the state Department of Education and in e-mails circulated to other parents at the statewide cyber school. The parents say they were just trying to get answers about the relationship between Cynwyd Group and Agora. The cyber school rents its headquarters from Cynwyd under a nine-year lease and pays the firm a management fee of at least 4 percent, according to a services agreement. Brown owns Cynwyd and serves as its senior consultant to Agora, according to school and state records. The civil suit Brown filed in Montgomery County Court on Jan. 21 alleges that the parents made misleading statements "that give the clear but false impression that Dr. Brown is corrupt, incompetent and possibly criminal." The suit also says the parents' association "sought to interfere with Cynwyd's contractual relationship with Agora by spreading untruths about Dr. Brown and by implying that she had improperly used public funds." Brown and Cynwyd are seeking more than $150,000 in damages for libel, slander and civil conspiracy. "The allegations are false," Gladys Stefany of Milton, Pike County, said in an e-mail yesterday. She said she learned about the suit last Tuesday when she was served with papers. 'Civil conspiracy' "When did asking for information that is or should be public information become 'civil conspiracy?' " asked Stefany, who has a 15-year-old daughter enrolled in Agora and is president of the parents' organization. "It is sad that it has come to this, but I'm happy we'll finally have the opportunity to air our case in the open and get answers to our questions." Stefany said the questions did not involve the school's academic program. She said she was more than satisfied with the instruction her special-needs daughter has received. News of the suit left several lawyers and education officials scratching their heads. "I haven't heard of a case of this sort in recent memory," Len Reiser, co-director of the Education Law Center in Center City, said yesterday. Lawyers from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association agreed. SLAPP suit? Angelique Smith of Aston and her husband, Ira, are among the six parents named in the complaint. She said she believed the case amounted to what is known as a "strategic lawsuit against public participation" (SLAPP) and was meant to intimidate and silence critics. "This is really about freedom of speech and freedom of association," Smith said. "This is akin to going to a regular public school and telling the PTA to get out." Brown referred all questions about the suit to her attorney, Wendy Beetlestone. Beetlestone said it was a defamation case and not a SLAPP suit. "In any kind of public discussion, you have to make sure that what you say is true and doesn't bring down the reputation of the person you're talking about," Beetlestone said. She said parents had failed to respond to requests to stop spreading information that she said defamed Brown. "June Brown is a highly respected and innovative educator and has been for many years," Beetlestone said. "When the debate turns to making false statements and doing everything they can to bring her down, she is left with no other option. That's what this lawsuit is about." Brown is the founder of three traditional charter schools in Philadelphia. In 2005, she and Brien N. Gardiner, founder of the Philadelphia Academy Charter School in Northeast Philadelphia, co-founded Agora to provide online home instruction to students across the state. The school Web site listed Gardiner as a co-founder, but his name was removed in May after he became the subject of a federal criminal investigation at Philadelphia Academy and was fired from his consulting position at the charter. The lawsuit against the parents claims Gardiner "had no role in founding Agora and his name does not appear in Agora's application for a charter or in subsequent organizational documents." Brown's lawsuit also charges that Agora parents tried to imply that she "was guilty of some financial wrongdoing on the basis of her association with Gardiner." Records show that Brown and Gardiner did business together. In 2005, they established Cynwyd Group as an educational management company, state records show. In November 2007, the company paid $1.9 million to buy a property at 60 Chestnut Ave., Tredyffrin, that houses the Agora headquarters. The relationship between Gardiner and Brown was severed in May 2008. Gardiner and others were removed from Philadelphia Academy in May. An int

Sadly, you can sue anyone for anything...a guy in NY state a few years back brought a lawsuit against the DMV for posting an unflattering picture of him on a government document - i.e., his driver's license. (Under that logic, we all ought to sue.) However, just because she CAN sue doesn't mean she should - and hopefully, the court will throw this out. If she started the school and is renting a building from herself using government funds (if it's an online public charter), she is guilty of mishandling funds and this should come to light. That's not slander, it's just a fact.

2
Be allowed? No Can he? Yes We live in a sue happy nation. Anyone can sue just about anyone for anything at anytime. Ridiculous ain't it?

3
i did not feel like reading all of that so GOOD LUCK <3

4
wow!this is a new one. Why didnt the certain person just answer the parent's questions?I do not understand that part. Since when does a person get sued for asking questions? If that were the case I would be in court every week! I dont think the parents should be sued at all. I think it sets a bad example for the other students at the academy. You know, grownups not being able to settle their differences,so hey, lets just sue everybody! This is ridiculous.

will i get a good paying job by graduating from a Pennsylvania state school?

will i get a good paying job by graduating from a Pennsylvania state school?
i actually picked sru (im going into my second semester as a freshman), awesome school spirit, awesome school, there doing great things there,, really awesome new dining halls and amazing dorms, but it seems like it cost so much to go home..specially being 6 hours away from Philadelphia. Im not entirely homesick but going home 2 or 3 times a semester is pretty hard when you don't always have somebody to go to. i applied to many small private and really good schools and got in, could have gone to "big name schools" but i have a fear of big schools.. recently somebody asked me what school i attend and i replied slippery rock university, they laughed and said, that's embarrassing and told me its going to be tough to get a job with a state school out of westernPennsylvaniania specially if i want to go back to the east coast. so my question is what school closer to the east coast will be good to transfer (Business and IT)? with a reputable name...? preferably not so expensive and possibly public? maybe also not so urban lol

At one time, I read there were 80 colleges and universities in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. I will list below some of the places where you can locate financial aid and colleges accepting it. There are a lot of them. All financial aid places are free to apply to their program. Apply to FAFSA.ed.gov because it will help you tap into need based financial aid on the college and federal government level. Pennsylvania has a website devoted to financial aid at PHEAA.org. Finally, I have provided a list of places that take financial aid (FAFSA form). Good luck!

I am a new graduate registered nurse, where can I get this much needed one year of experience?
Hi, I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I graduated nursing school in April of 2009. I have been applying for job after job, with no results. Everybody seems to want at least a year of experience, even nursing homes! I don't seem to understand where I am supposed to work if nursing homes are asking me for one year of experience. I can't even get any interviews. Can somebody please help me?

Maybe for now you can offer to work for little or no pay under another Registered Nurse. If you can just get your foot in the door and establish yourself somewhere they may be willing to offer you a position. And if they don't offer you a position at least you have the experience. This is what I would do in the meantime....just keep filling out those applications and sending out those resumes!!!!!!

2
There are jobs out there for new grads but unfortunately they may not be in your area. You might have to start looking out of the area or out of state before you locate a position. Metro areas tend to be oversaturated with new grads while rural areas are usually less stringent on experience. Keep on applying and send in your application everywhere!

I would talk to my school principal and see if they can find a recycling center that would pick up the used papers for free and recycle them.

Well you should take the train. The R5 (Paoli/Thorndale) My older brother went to school at Temple and he took the train from Malvern to Temple University station. My mother was also a frequent train rider - she rode the train at 7:15 AM during the week also from Malvern to Suburban Station for more then 12 years and she never had any problems. Whenever I took the train, there were always people going to work, so no incidents ever occurred. Since you said West Chester, you may be closer to the Exton Station, but depending on what time you arrive at the station, parking may be a problem. (Malvern and Paoli stations have small parking lots). Here's the schedule for the R5 service; http://www.septa.org/service/sched/pdfs/R5PT.pdf

2
The R5 is a good bet, unfortunately it doesn't go to West Chester. You can however take a bus from WC to the Exton Station. Or drive to the Whitford, Exton, or Malvern stations, though parking does fill up there. The other transit option is bus to the 69th St Terminal, from which you can take train into the city. If you have a car and are up for more of a drive, you could also drive to the Elwyn or Media stations and take the R3 train. I would think the bus to Exton, and switch to the R5 would be the easiest and safe. All of these are run by SEPTA, www.septa.org

3
Hello, those people above me are correct, the R5 is a good bet. Although R5 is not in West Chester, it could be considered as so because of how CLOSE it is. I used to live in Exton Station and commuted about 7-10 minutes to West Chester. The ride is about 45 minutes to one hour long. Also, there is the Septa bus and the L train, but I don't recommend that route.

4
train is the fastest. What school are you going to? I use to take the L train but im not sure if that is close to you.

I'm from pa and i know bartenders who have never gone to school for it .

2
No. Bartending is best learned through experience. School will help but most bars want someone with experience.

3
There is no such thing as a licensed bartender. So you don't HAVE to go to school for it. Although, when I finished my classes I got an Alcohol Awareness ID, which helps establishments lower their liability insurance rates (which they like). I just finished school here in Orlando and I loved it. Yes, bars and restaurants prefer experience...but how do you GET the experience?? The school will help you get some of the basics down and many offer job placement assistance. This doesn't mean that they will hand you a job, it means they will give you leads (addresses, phone numbers, and contacts in establishments) and it's up to YOU to get the job. Unfortunately, my school doesn't have a location in PA. Google bartending schools in your area, and don't commit to one until you've checked it out! There are 2 major bartending schools here in Orlando, the one I went to was good, while the other has a lesser reputation. Do your research and HAVE FUN!

The same were ever you go to be honest with you. Same thing different location.. Look at crime rates int he individual areas.. Philidelphia is merely lost to drugs and crime.. they have a very high sex crime thing near colleges The rest are the same crime in every major city but Some parts of philly are nice to live.. The same as the other cities. Your better off moving to a small town outside of one of those cities and putting you kid in a smaller school with less class mates and more attention! Private school is about 300 a month and you can right it off on your taxes! This way you can look up parents rating that attend the school.

you definitely need to specify that you pay to live there.. and your not getting no freebies... but they're going to want a letter from your parents stating how much you give them each month and what not. I live in PA too .. delco.. and I applied for chip while still living at my fathers house but i stated that I pay rent for a downstairs apartment... so they did my income and said i make too little money to be on chip... hahaha.. (not funny at the time) i was highly p.o'd, i got all hype cuz the commercial says "no kid is uncovered" they then stated they sent my info to the public assistance office and I got better than ChiP insurance for my baby boy!!... Maybe try going to the welfare office and applying for assistance, but you really have to be paying rent and all that nonsense.. cuz they'll catch you lying if your not careful. O and it took 15 days after they received it to give me a result.

2
We had the NY version a while back when I lost my job and before we moved back to PA. I don't think you will have a problem as long as you think of the allowance as rent and list it as such. You shouldn't have to list your parents income as long as you have your own income and are not taking money from them. Also your parents should not be claiming you as a dependant on their income tax. As long as you have your own income and list your rent payments along with any other bills you pay everything should be fine and it shouldn't take long at all to get coverage. Once you apply for coverage you can take you child to a ER for anything major then submit the bills to the carrier once you get the cards in the mail. Good luck!
